Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has completed a season-long loan move to Italian side Como after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The 28-year-old lost his place as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper following the arrival of Argentina international Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in a £7.5 million deal.
Sanchez started Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham but endured a difficult afternoon, with Josh King’s effort slipping through his grasp as the Blues survived to claim a 3-2 victory.
His performance raised further questions over his position, with Chelsea subsequently bringing in Martinez to provide greater competition between the posts.
Martinez was immediately handed his debut in Chelsea’s 4-3 victory over Brighton on Sunday, while Sanchez was left out of the matchday squad.
Sanchez joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 and went on to make 112 appearances for the club, helping them win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
He will now spend the season in Serie A with Como, managed by former Chelsea and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
According to reports, Como have an option to make Sanchez’s move permanent at the end of the loan spell.
The transfer brings an end, at least temporarily, to Sanchez’s time as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper as manager Xabi Alonso continues to reshape his squad.
