Manchester United have allowed the transfer deadline to pass without signing a new left-back, leaving manager Michael Carrick with a potentially significant problem for the season ahead.
With the 23:00 BST deadline arriving on 1 September, United fans were left asking the same question: where is the left-back?
The position had been identified as an obvious area for reinforcement throughout the summer, particularly after Tyrell Malacia was allowed to leave when his contract expired at the end of June.
United currently have just one senior orthodox left-back in Luke Shaw.
The 31-year-old enjoyed an exceptional 2025-26 campaign, starting all 38 of United’s Premier League matches despite his long history of injury problems.
However, expecting Shaw to maintain that workload in a season that could potentially involve more than 60 games represents a considerable risk.
United explored several options during the summer, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas among the players linked with a move to Old Trafford.
The club’s final attempt came for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, with United exploring the possibility of bringing the Algerian international across the Manchester divide on loan.
However, City rejected the proposal.
United would reportedly have needed to include an obligation to buy as part of any agreement, but ultimately decided against committing to those terms.
Instead, the club opted to wait for their preferred targets rather than make a late signing simply for the sake of adding another player.
Now that the deadline has passed, Carrick must navigate the first half of the campaign with his current options.
For United, the decision represents a calculated gamble.
If Shaw remains fit, the club’s decision could prove justified. But with injuries, fixture congestion and a potentially demanding season ahead, the lack of left-back cover could quickly become one of the biggest weaknesses in Carrick’s squad.
For now, United will have to wait until the January transfer window before they can address the position again.
