Morocco produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw to book their place in the Round of 16 and send Ronald Koeman’s side crashing out of the tournament.
The Atlas Lions forced extra time with virtually the last attack of normal time before holding their nerve from the spot, where Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty to complete a famous victory and inflict one of the most painful defeats in Dutch World Cup history.
The Oranje appeared to be on course for an unlikely win after Cody Gakpo fired them ahead in the 72nd minute, despite Morocco dominating large periods of the contest.
The North Africans controlled possession, created the clearer opportunities and repeatedly exposed the Dutch defence. Azzedine Ounahi squandered one of the best first-half chances, while goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was forced into a series of outstanding saves to keep the score level.
One of the Netherlands’ defining moments came just after the hour mark when Micky van de Ven produced a superb recovery tackle to deny Achraf Hakimi after the Morocco captain broke through on goal.
The second-half hydration break briefly appeared to revive Koeman’s side. Crysencio Summerville sparked a quick counterattack before Gakpo reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area, firing beyond Yassine Bounou to hand the Dutch an advantage against the run of play.
However, rather than build on the lead, the Netherlands retreated deeper, inviting relentless Moroccan pressure.
Virgil van Dijk produced a vital block to deny Saibari in the closing stages, but the resistance finally cracked in stoppage time when Issa Diop powered home a header to send the match into extra time.
Morocco continued to look the more dangerous side during the additional 30 minutes, with Soufiane Rahimi wasting a glorious opportunity before Verbruggen produced another excellent save to keep the Dutch alive.
The penalty shootout ultimately exposed the Netherlands’ frailties.
Teun Koopmeiners gave the Oranje the perfect start, but misses from Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber, coupled with Bounou’s save from Summerville, handed Morocco the advantage before Saibari calmly buried the winning kick to spark wild celebrations among the Moroccan supporters.
The victory continues Morocco’s impressive record in World Cup shootouts and sends the 2022 semi-finalists into another knockout round after another memorable triumph over European opposition.
For the Netherlands, the defeat marks a bitter end to a disappointing campaign. Despite boasting one of the tournament’s strongest attacking squads, Koeman’s men struggled to impose themselves, were second-best for long spells and ultimately paid the price for adopting an increasingly defensive approach after taking the lead.
The result represents the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup exit in the modern era and is likely to intensify scrutiny over Koeman’s tactics, substitutions and the team’s inability to capitalize on its attacking talent when it mattered most.
