Belgium and Senegal will battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in Seattle after both sides completed dramatic turnarounds to qualify from their respective groups.
The Red Devils emphatically topped Group G, producing their biggest-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a commanding 5-1 demolition of New Zealand on the final matchday. The result completed a remarkable recovery after Belgium failed to win either of their opening two group matches.
Rudi Garcia’s side now arrive in the knockout stage full of confidence, carrying a 16-match unbeaten run (10 wins, six draws) and appearing to have rediscovered their attacking rhythm at the perfect time. Their five-goal explosion against New Zealand exceeded the number of goals they had scored across their previous seven World Cup matches combined.
Senegal’s journey has mirrored Belgium’s in many ways. The African side also opened the tournament with back-to-back defeats before keeping their World Cup dream alive with a convincing 5-0 victory over 10-man Iraq. That win was enough to see the Lions of Teranga squeeze into the knockout rounds as the eighth-best third-placed team.
However, history presents a major challenge for Senegal. They have lost each of their last four World Cup matches against European opposition, including knockout defeats to Turkey and England, while Belgium have enjoyed considerable success against African teams, losing just one of their six World Cup meetings with sides from the continent.
Despite those statistics, Senegal possess enough attacking quality to trouble any defence. Their three group matches produced 14 goals, with only Norway’s fixtures generating more goals during the group stage. Notably, 10 of Senegal’s last 12 goals have come after half-time, highlighting their ability to finish matches strongly.
Belgium, meanwhile, have shown greater defensive discipline, conceding only one second-half goal in their last six matches while averaging seven shots on target per game during the group stage.
The clash will also feature two in-form forwards aiming to make history. Romelu Lukaku, who registered a goal and an assist in Belgium’s final group match, now holds the record for the most World Cup goal involvements by a Belgian player since 1966, with six goals and two assists. Senegal will look to midfielder Pape Gueye, who inspired the victory over Iraq with two goals and an assist, leaving him just one goal contribution shy of Senegal’s all-time World Cup record.
Belgium have no injury concerns heading into the contest, while Senegal will be without first-choice goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who has been ruled out with a knee sprain.
Although Belgium enter the encounter as slight favourites based on form and experience, Senegal’s resilience and attacking threat suggest they are capable of producing another World Cup upset in what promises to be one of the most entertaining Round of 16 fixtures.
