Andoni Iraola enjoyed a winning start as Liverpool head coach after the Reds defeated Sunderland 4-2 in an entertaining opening match of their pre-season tour of the United States.

The Spaniard, who succeeded Arne Slot at Anfield in June, watched his side produce an encouraging attacking display despite suffering an early injury setback.

Young midfielder Kieran Morrison opened the scoring after just 13 minutes, finishing off a slick team move that showcased the attacking style Iraola is looking to implement at Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas also found the net as the Reds secured an impressive victory in the sweltering conditions in Nashville.

Liverpool’s only concern came when defender Joe Gomez was forced off early after picking up an injury, casting a shadow over an otherwise positive afternoon for the Merseyside club.

Despite Sunderland scoring twice, Liverpool remained in control for much of the contest, creating numerous chances and displaying the high-intensity football that supporters hope will define the Iraola era.

The result gives Liverpool an ideal start to their summer preparations, with Iraola set to use the remainder of the US tour to further refine his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
