League Two underdogs Fleetwood Town pulled off a stunning Carabao Cup upset, knocking Premier League champions Arsenal out 5-3 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw interrupted by a drone stoppage.
Fleetwood took a surprise lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the first half before Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres equalised shortly after the break.
The Gunners struggled to find a winner despite creating several chances, and their night worsened when teenage forward Max Dowman was sent off late in the game.
With neither side able to find a decisive goal, the tie went to penalties. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ spot-kick before Conor Haughey converted the winning penalty to spark wild celebrations.
The match had already taken an unusual turn early on when a drone appeared above the stadium, forcing play to be suspended for several minutes.
The remarkable victory sends Fleetwood into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, while Arsenal are left to reflect on a damaging cup exit.
