Elanga's Wonder Strike Sends Sweden Into Last 32 as Japan Set Up Brazil Showdown

A moment of brilliance from Anthony Elanga secured Sweden’s place in the World Cup knockout stage as the Scandinavians fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Japan in their final Group F encounter.

The Newcastle United winger produced a stunning second-half equaliser to ensure Graham Potter’s side finished third in the group with four points, a tally sufficient to book their place in the last 32.

Sweden will now await a daunting knockout assignment against one of France, Norway, Germany, or Switzerland, while Japan progressed as group runners-up and earned a blockbuster clash against five-time world champions Brazil.

For much of the opening period, both sides appeared content to avoid unnecessary risks. The first half lacked urgency and clear-cut opportunities, with neither team willing to expose themselves defensively in a match where a draw suited both nations.

However, the contest came to life after the interval.

Japan struck first in the 56th minute through Celtic forward Daizen Maeda after a beautifully constructed move. Ayase Ueda combined cleverly with Ritsu Doan before the latter delivered a precise pass that allowed Maeda to finish and hand the Samurai Blue the lead.

The advantage lasted only six minutes.

Elanga, making his first start of the tournament, collected possession on the left flank before cutting inside and unleashing a thunderous strike from the edge of the penalty area. The powerful effort flew beyond goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who appeared unsighted until the ball was already past him.

The goal changed the complexion of the contest and injected fresh energy into Sweden, who began to push for a winner.

Following the second-half hydration break, the tempo slowed once more as both teams appeared increasingly conscious of the implications of conceding. Nevertheless, Sweden came closest to grabbing all three points in stoppage time.

Elanga continued to torment the Japanese defence, while Alexander Isak also tested Suzuki, who produced two important saves to preserve Japan’s point and second-place finish.

The draw means the Netherlands top Group F, with Japan joining them in the knockout rounds. Sweden, meanwhile, progress as one of the best third-placed teams after demonstrating resilience and composure when it mattered most.

For Elanga, the evening represented a personal breakthrough. Having waited patiently for his opportunity, the winger delivered a goal of genuine quality that not only rescued Sweden but ensured his nation’s World Cup journey continues.

Japan now face the enormous challenge of Brazil, while Sweden enter the knockout rounds carrying momentum and the belief that one spectacular strike may yet prove to be the turning point of their tournament.
