Five-time world champions Brazil secured top spot in Group C after a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland in Miami, while Morocco also advanced to the knockout stages following an entertaining 4-2 win over Haiti.
Brazil finished first in the group on goal difference ahead of Morocco, setting up a favorable route into the Round of 32 as the tournament enters its knockout phase.
For Scotland, however, the defeat leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread and threatens to extend their long wait for a breakthrough on football’s biggest stage.
Vinicius Jr. was the star of the evening at the Hard Rock Stadium, scoring twice as Brazil produced their most convincing display of the tournament. The Real Madrid forward capitalized on a costly error from defender Scott McKenna after just seven minutes, calmly finishing to hand the Selecao an early advantage.
Scotland struggled to recover from the setback as Brazil dominated possession and controlled the tempo. Vinicius struck again in first-half stoppage time, heading home to double the South Americans’ lead and effectively end the contest before the interval.
Manchester United striker Matheus Cunha completed the scoring in the 60th minute, putting the result beyond doubt as Brazil comfortably secured all three points.
The match also provided a major moment for Brazilian fans as veteran forward Neymar made his first appearance of the tournament. The country’s all-time leading scorer came off the bench in the second half, receiving a warm reception from supporters inside the stadium.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his team’s collective performance and welcomed Neymar’s return.
We played as a collective, and that’s a good thing,” Ancelotti said after the match. “There are many positive things, such as Neymar’s appearance, which can help us.
Elsewhere, South Africa produced one of the tournament’s surprises by defeating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey to finish second in Group A. The historic victory secured Bafana Bafana a place in the Round of 32, where they will face Canada, who also reached the knockout rounds for the first time after finishing second in Group B.
While Brazil marches forward with growing confidence and Morocco continues their impressive campaign, Scotland face an anxious wait as their hopes of progression now depend on other results.
For the thousands of travelling Tartan Army supporters, another painful World Cup exit may be looming, while Brazil appears to be gathering momentum at exactly the right time.
