Ecuador Shocks Germany to Reach World Cup Knockouts, Leaves Scotland Sweating

Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage as La Tri came from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 in New Jersey, securing a dramatic place in the knockout rounds and complicating Scotland’s hopes of progression.

The South Americans, who had failed to score in their opening two matches, completed a remarkable turnaround as goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata cancelled out Leroy Sane’s early opener for Germany.

Already assured of qualification, Germany made the perfect start when Sane struck after just 109 seconds, firing home to give the four-time world champions the lead and seemingly put Scotland’s qualification hopes on firmer ground.

However, Ecuador responded brilliantly. Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute with a superb finish, ending Ecuador’s frustrating run in front of goal after 40 attempts across their opening two matches.

The contest remained finely balanced throughout the second half, with VAR playing a crucial role. Germany believed they had won a penalty after Kai Havertz went down inside the area, but referee Tori Penso overturned the decision following a pitchside review after determining that Pedro Vite had been fouled earlier in the move.

Ecuador sensed an opportunity and continued to push forward. Their persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the penalty area, stabbing the ball past Manuel Neuer after Germany failed to deal with a corner.

The late winner sparked wild celebrations among Ecuador’s supporters and secured the country’s place in the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in their history.

The victory also reshapes the tournament’s knockout picture. Ecuador advances as one of the best third-placed teams and could emerge as a potential round-of-32 opponent for England should the Three Lions finish top of Group L.

For Scotland, meanwhile, the result delivered a significant setback. Steve Clarke’s side dropped into the final qualification spot among the third-placed teams, leaving their hopes hanging by a thread with other groups still to conclude.

Germany, despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament, remain safely through to the last 32. Julian Nagelsmann’s side will now turn their attention to their knockout clash against a third-placed finisher from Groups A, B, C, D or F.

For Ecuador, though, the night belonged entirely to them. After two scoreless matches and doubts over their chances, Sebastian Beccacece’s side delivered when it mattered most to write another memorable chapter in the nation’s World Cup history.
