Harrogate Town have begun preparations for life outside the English Football League by securing the signing of midfielder Bailey Hobson on a free transfer following his departure from Chesterfield FC.
The 23-year-old arrives after Chesterfield confirmed earlier on Friday that he would not be offered a new contract, bringing an end to his time at the club.
Hobson becomes Harrogate’s first addition since the club’s relegation earlier this month, as the Sulphurites begin rebuilding ahead of the new campaign.
During the 2025-26 season, Hobson made 21 league appearances for Chesterfield, scoring once, while also spending part of the campaign on loan with National League side Brackley Town.
Although Harrogate have not disclosed the length of the midfielder’s contract, the move signals the club’s intent to reshape the squad quickly following their drop from the Football League.
Head of player recruitment Lloyd Kerry believes Hobson possesses the qualities needed to make an immediate impact.
“He’ll run all day, has great energy, is a really fit lad and can cover a few positions. We think he’s a really good fit for us in terms of his style,” Kerry told the club’s official website.
Known for his work rate, versatility and physical intensity, Hobson is expected to add energy and flexibility to Harrogate’s midfield options as the club looks to mount a promotion challenge.
For Hobson, the move offers an opportunity for regular football and a fresh start, while for Harrogate it represents the first step in what is likely to be a significant summer rebuild following a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation.
