Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso enjoyed a winning start to his reign as the Blues defeated Western Sydney Wanderers 6-4 in an entertaining pre-season friendly, with Joao Pedro stealing the show with a stunning nine-minute hat-trick.
The Brazilian forward delivered a clinical display at Accor Stadium, showcasing his pace, power and finishing to underline his status as Chelsea’s first-choice striker ahead of the new season.
Alonso praised the 24-year-old after the match, describing him as “very, very hungry” and “determined to have a great season,” suggesting the forward is eager to respond after missing out on Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Another encouraging performance came from Dastan Satpaev, who scored the first goal of Alonso’s tenure with a spectacular strike just six minutes into the contest.
The 17-year-old Kazakhstan international featured as a trialist because he cannot officially complete his move from FC Kairat until August 12, but his display further strengthened his case for a place in Chelsea’s plans.
While Joao Pedro and Satpaev impressed, it was another difficult outing for Liam Delap.
The striker, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million last summer, struggled to make an impact and continues to face an uncertain future after failing to convince during pre-season.
Reports suggest Chelsea are advancing talks to sign veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the 35-year-old viewed as an experienced option who could replace Delap in the first-team squad.
Chelsea are also pursuing Jordan Henderson, 36, as they seek to add leadership and experience following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.
Asked about the club’s interest in older players, Alonso insisted the Blues are looking for the right balance within the squad.
“We need balance, to have a complete squad and make a good team. For that, we have an idea and plan,” the Spaniard said.
Despite defensive lapses in a high-scoring contest, Chelsea’s attacking display offered plenty of encouragement as Alonso’s new era got off to a victorious start, with Joao Pedro emerging as the biggest winner and Delap’s future becoming increasingly uncertain.
