World Cup 2026: Emotional Jimenez Completes Remarkable Comeback as Mexico Beat South Africa

Raul Jimenez’s remarkable football journey came full circle on the grandest stage as the veteran striker scored in Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 35-year-old forward, whose career was once in serious doubt following a life-threatening head injury in 2020, delivered a memorable moment at the iconic Estadio Azteca, helping Mexico launch their World Cup campaign with a convincing win.

Mexico took the lead early through Julian Quinones, whose ninth-minute strike became the first goal of the expanded 48-team tournament. However, it was Jimenez’s second-half header that captured the hearts of fans inside the packed stadium.

Meeting a precise cross from Roberto Alvarado, Jimenez rose above the South African defence and powered home Mexico’s second goal before celebrating passionately. The striker then pointed to the sky in an emotional tribute believed to be dedicated to his late father, Raul Jimenez Vega, who passed away in March.

Overcome by emotion, Jimenez was reduced to tears as teammates rushed to celebrate with him, marking a moment few could have imagined after the horrific skull fracture he suffered while playing club football nearly six years ago.

From Tragedy to Triumph

In November 2020, Jimenez suffered a devastating head injury during a Premier League match, an incident that left him with a fractured skull and raised fears over both his career and his long-term health.

After undergoing surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker gradually rebuilt his career, eventually returning to international prominence with Mexico.

His goal against South Africa now stands as one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament so far.

“We really congratulated him because he gives a lot to the team,” Quinones said after the match.

“Being part of a team is our pride and it’s wonderful he continues to add goals to his career as a player in our national team.”

Dream Start for Hosts

The victory gives Mexico national football team a perfect start to their home World Cup campaign and provides early momentum as they seek a deep run in front of their passionate supporters.

For Jimenez, however, the night represented far more than three points. It was the culmination of years of recovery, resilience and determination—a reminder that one of football’s most remarkable comeback stories is still being written.
