Nigerian football icon Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has officially been presented with FIFA’s retroactive World Cup Superior Player of the Match award for his unforgettable display against Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
The special honour recognises one of the most celebrated individual performances in World Cup history, when Okocha inspired Nigeria to a famous 3-2 victory over Spain in the group stage.
A Performance That Became Legendary
Okocha’s brilliance that night remains etched in football memory. The midfielder dazzled with his dribbling, creativity and composure, repeatedly tormenting Spain’s defence and controlling the tempo of the match.
One moment in particular became iconic: his sensational feint and finish that left Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta wrong-footed before the ball was calmly slotted into the net. The goal is still widely regarded as one of the greatest ever scored by a Nigerian player at the World Cup.
Recognition Decades Later
Although the original FIFA Man of the Match structure at the 1998 tournament differed from the modern system, FIFA has now retrospectively acknowledged Okocha’s display with the Superior Player of the Match distinction.
The award was officially revealed and presented to the former Super Eagles captain, bringing renewed global attention to Nigeria’s memorable 1998 campaign.
Nigeria’s Golden Generation
The victory over Spain was one of the defining moments of Nigeria’s so-called “Golden Generation,” which featured stars such as Nwankwo Kanu, Sunday Oliseh, Taribo West and Daniel Amokachi.
Nigeria went on to top their group before eventually losing to Denmark in the Round of 16, but the Spain match remains one of the country’s most cherished World Cup performances.
A Lasting Legacy
Okocha, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, enjoyed a distinguished club career with teams including Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers.
For many fans, however, his artistry in a Nigerian shirt especially on that magical night against Spain remains the defining image of his career.
The retroactive FIFA honour serves as both a personal tribute to Okocha and a celebration of one of the most entertaining performances the World Cup has ever produced.
