Atletico Madrid have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero after holding fresh talks over a potential move for the Argentina international.

Romero, who signed a new four-year contract with Spurs last August, is now expected to leave the North London club before the close of the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old has also attracted interest from Serie A giants Inter Milan following another impressive campaign with Argentina, where he featured in all seven matches as the reigning world champions reached the 2026 FIFA World Cup final before losing to Spain.

However, Atletico Madrid appear to be leading the race for the experienced defender.

Manager Diego Simeone has long admired his fellow Argentine and is believed to be pushing the La Liga club to complete a deal after identifying Romero as a key addition to strengthen his defence.

Tottenham are fully aware of Atletico’s interest, and reports suggest agreeing personal terms with the player is unlikely to be a stumbling block should negotiations between the clubs progress.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi recently acknowledged that he would “respect the will” of any player who wishes to leave, a statement that has fuelled speculation over Romero’s future.

Romero endured a difficult campaign with Tottenham last season.

The centre-back missed the closing stages of the season with a knee injury and was sent off twice during a turbulent campaign that saw Spurs narrowly avoid relegation by securing survival on the final day.

While Romero’s future remains uncertain, Tottenham have moved to secure another key defender, with Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven reportedly close to signing a new five-year contract with the club.

Should Romero complete a move to Atletico Madrid, it would mark the end of a memorable spell in North London and hand Simeone one of Europe’s most accomplished central defenders as the Spanish side looks to challenge for major honours next season.
