Spanish giants Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million.
The transfer package is reported to include an initial fee of £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons. The 27-year-old is currently away with the Spain national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but all parties have now agreed terms on a permanent move.
Cucurella’s return to Spain had been widely anticipated. The left-back, who came through the youth ranks at FC Barcelona, had previously been linked with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
The defender joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for £63 million and went on to become a regular figure in the Premier League side. However, growing uncertainty at Stamford Bridge and managerial changes reportedly influenced his decision to seek a return to La Liga.
Real Madrid’s summer rebuild appears far from complete. Club president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho are also believed to be targeting Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan as they continue strengthening the squad.
Meanwhile, French defender Ibrahima Konate is also expected to arrive in Madrid after departing Liverpool.
Cucurella’s arrival provides Real Madrid with an experienced option at left-back as they prepare for the 2026-27 campaign under head coach Xabi Alonso, who recently took charge of the club.
For Chelsea, the sale marks another significant squad reshuffle following a disappointing season that saw the Blues finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European qualification.
