Okocha, Mikel Reveal How Their Names Were Changed

Former Super Eagles captains Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha and John Obi Mikel have revealed the surprising stories behind the names by which they became famous.

The two former Nigeria internationals opened up about their name changes while speaking on the Obi One Podcast, explaining how circumstances during their early football careers eventually led to the names becoming permanent.

Okocha, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, explained that the nickname “Jay Jay” originated from his childhood days playing street football.

According to the former Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers star, several members of his family played football, including his younger brother James, who was the original “Jay Jay”.

“Well, I think it started all in the neighbourhood where we grew up,” Okocha said.

“You know, all of us were footballers because we had no other toys. We were just on the street playing.

“And my two brothers played as well, so we had a few Austins. So, to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay Jay’s brother.

“So, from there, Austin Jay Jay stuck.”

Okocha added that the nickname became even more useful when he began travelling outside Nigeria, as people often struggled to pronounce his first name, Augustine.

“So, when I travelled, some people were struggling to pronounce my name, ‘Augustine’. So, ‘Jay Jay’ was a lot easier,” he explained.

“So, I said I might as well adopt the name, and I put it in my passport. Yeah, it’s in my passport now. It’s officially mine.”

Mikel, meanwhile, revealed that his famous name was the result of a printing mistake during an Under-17 tournament.

The former Chelsea midfielder said he submitted “Michael” as his name, but organisers mistakenly printed “Mikel” on his shirt.

“That’s like me as well. I changed my name. You remember the story?” Mikel said.

“At the Under-17 tournament, when they went to print the names, I gave them Michael. They came back with Mikel, and Mikel sounds better than Michael.”

Mikel went on to enjoy a successful tournament and decided to keep the name rather than correct the error.

“I had a fantastic tournament. I was like, you know what? I’m just gonna keep it,” he added.

“Of course, I put it in my passport as well.”

Both players subsequently became household names in Nigerian and international football, with their adopted names becoming synonymous with some of the country’s greatest football moments.

Okocha enjoyed a celebrated career with clubs including Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers, while Mikel spent more than a decade at Chelsea and won the Champions League, Europa League and two Premier League titles.

Their revelations offer a fascinating insight into how two names that became iconic in Nigerian football history were created almost by accident.
