Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has strongly defended Kylian Mbappé against criticism of the forward’s off-field activities during his recovery from a knee injury, describing the media backlash as “ridiculous”.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday ahead of Real Madrid’s La Liga clash against Villarreal, Mourinho dismissed suggestions that Mbappé had acted unprofessionally while recovering during the international break.
The French forward attracted criticism after being photographed at a private event in Paris and riding a bicycle while spending time in Switzerland. Some supporters questioned whether his activities were appropriate while recovering from injury.
Mourinho, however, explained that Mbappé had undergone medical examinations at Real Madrid before seeking an external specialist’s opinion because of the history of his knee injury. He added that both assessments had reached the same conclusion.
The Portuguese coach also clarified that the Paris event was not a conventional nightclub outing, explaining that the venue had been used for a private event during Paris Fashion Week. He said the bicycles in Switzerland were provided by the hotel for guests to travel between its facilities.
Mourinho insisted that Real Madrid’s players had fulfilled their professional responsibilities and warned against creating unnecessary controversy around the forward.
He also confirmed that Mbappé would play against Villarreal, saying he was confident the striker had not failed to meet his obligations to the club.
Real Madrid will host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday as they look to secure three points following their previous league defeat to Atlético Madrid.
