Liverpool staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Villarreal 4–3 at Anfield after falling two goals behind in an entertaining Champions League contest.
Villarreal took control early when Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a defensive mistake by Virgil van Dijk. Sergi Cardona then extended the visitors’ advantage, leaving Liverpool with a difficult task.
The hosts responded through Alexis Mac Allister, who headed home from a corner, before Ronald Araújo scored to bring Liverpool level at 2–2. Mac Allister struck again in the second half, and Florian Wirtz added what proved to be the decisive goal.
Villarreal continued to threaten, with Tani Oluwaseyi scoring a late goal, but Liverpool held on for all three points. UEFA named Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha Player of the Match for his influential performance.
The victory maintained Liverpool’s 100 per cent record after three league-phase matches. However, the goals conceded will give the coaching staff defensive issues to address ahead of the next European fixture.
