Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 21-year career with Argentina to an emotional end at the age of 39.
The Argentina captain confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, in an emotional message posted on social media. Messi said the decision “hurts” deeply but acknowledged that the time had come to close the chapter with the national team.
Messi’s final appearance for Argentina came in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where La Albiceleste lost 1-0 to Spain. The defeat came after Messi had helped Argentina reach a second consecutive World Cup final, having already led the country to glory in Qatar in 2022.
The Barcelona and Inter Miami superstar leaves the national team as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, having made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals. His international honours include the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2008 Olympic gold medal and the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
Messi’s relationship with Argentina was not always straightforward. After suffering several painful defeats in major finals, including the 2014 World Cup final and back-to-back Copa América final losses, he briefly announced his international retirement in 2016 before returning to the team.
His eventual triumph at the 2021 Copa América and, most importantly, the 2022 World Cup victory transformed his international legacy and finally delivered the major trophy many believed had eluded him for too long.
In his farewell message, Messi said he had given everything to the Argentina shirt and pointed to the emergence of a new generation of players who deserve their opportunity.
The announcement also comes weeks after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August. Messi had previously admitted that the loss had left him with serious doubts about how much longer he would continue playing football.
Messi’s international retirement does not mean the end of his playing career. He remains with Inter Miami, where he continues to compete at club level.
After more than two decades, Argentina must now prepare for life without the player who wore the famous No. 10 shirt through one of the greatest eras in the country’s football history.
