The threat of a European boycott of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, remains on the table after UEFA declared that FIFA’s response to the recent governance controversy “changes nothing.”
The latest development follows growing opposition to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s now-abandoned proposal to allow private investors to purchase stakes in the governing body’s flagship competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.
The English Football Association has formally withdrawn its support for Infantino, becoming the latest influential body to distance itself from the FIFA president over the controversial plan.
Although Infantino has since shelved the proposal amid widespread criticism, UEFA insists the move alone is not enough to restore trust.
In a strongly worded statement, European football’s governing body said its key demands remain unmet.
“First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn, and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again,” UEFA said.
“These conditions have not been met.”
UEFA has previously accused FIFA of attempting to push through what it described as a “shabby, back-room, opaque deal” through the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), arguing that the plan threatened the independence and long-term future of world football.
The organisation has also made it clear that it has lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership, with relations between the two governing bodies deteriorating significantly in recent weeks.
The dispute has fuelled speculation that European nations could boycott future FIFA competitions if their concerns are not addressed, although no formal decision has yet been taken.
With Europe home to many of the world’s leading football nations and clubs, any coordinated boycott would have enormous implications for the World Cup and other FIFA tournaments.
The standoff marks one of the most significant governance crises in modern football, with pressure continuing to mount on FIFA to provide greater transparency and assurances over the future management of the global game.
