Could Chelsea’s ‘Cobham Next Gen’ Rebrand Spark Fresh Fan Protests?

Chelsea’s decision to rename their Under-21 and Under-19 teams as Cobham Next Gen has sparked a strong backlash from supporters, with one prominent fan group warning that further protests could follow.

The Blues announced on Tuesday that their two leading academy sides would operate under the new name, abbreviated as CNG, from the start of the 2026/27 season. The club said the change better reflects the age profile of the squads and their role in developing players for the senior team.

Chelsea explained that although the leading academy side competed as an Under-21 team in Premier League 2 last season, its average age was closer to that of an Under-18 squad, with several 16-year-olds featuring regularly.

The club also said the new identity was intended to highlight the pathway from Cobham to first-team football and reinforce the academy’s reputation for producing senior players.

However, the decision has not been well received by some supporters.

The fan group Not a Project CFC, which organised protests against Chelsea’s ownership last season, described the rebrand as another example of what it sees as the erosion of the club’s identity and heritage.

The group said it was “angered and frustrated” by the decision and criticised the ownership for what it described as stripping away elements of Chelsea’s traditional identity.

It also urged other supporter organisations to publicly oppose the move and warned that it could call for further demonstrations if its concerns about the direction of the club continue to grow.

The controversy is particularly significant given the importance of the Cobham academy to Chelsea’s history. Current first-team players including captain Reece James and Levi Colwill came through the club’s youth system, while numerous other academy graduates have gone on to establish successful careers elsewhere.

Chelsea, however, insists the change is designed to strengthen rather than weaken the academy’s identity.

The club highlighted the success of its youth development system, noting that its leading academy side finished top of Premier League 2 last season despite being one of the youngest squads in the competition.

With supporters already expressing concerns about several aspects of the club under its current ownership, the decision to replace the familiar Under-21 and Under-19 labels has added another source of tension.

Whether the Cobham Next Gen name eventually becomes accepted by supporters or becomes another flashpoint in the ongoing relationship between Chelsea fans and the club’s ownership remains to be seen.
