Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117 million deal with Aston Villa for England international Morgan Rogers, making the midfielder the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the agreement including an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.
Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, before completing the formalities of his move.
Record-Breaking Transfer
The transfer will not only set a new benchmark for Chelsea but also establish a new British record for an English player.
The £117 million fee surpasses the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
It also eclipses Chelsea’s previous club-record signing, the £107 million paid for Argentina World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The signing represents another major statement from the Blues under new manager Xabi Alonso, who is continuing to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Rogers’ rise has been remarkable.
After beginning his career in Manchester City’s academy, he joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £8 million, with performance-related bonuses taking the deal to £15 million.
In just over two years at Villa Park, the attacking midfielder developed into one of the Premier League’s brightest talents.
He scored 21 league goals in 85 appearances and played a key role in helping Unai Emery’s side win the UEFA Europa League, earning widespread praise for his versatility, creativity and ability to influence matches in the final third.

Rogers has earned 22 senior England caps, scoring once, and featured in seven matches during England’s run to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Middlesbrough Set for Major Windfall
The transfer will also deliver a substantial financial boost to Middlesbrough.
When Villa signed Rogers, the Championship club negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause covering any profit from a future transfer.
As a result, Middlesbrough are expected to receive at least £20.4 million, depending on the performance-related add-ons activated during Rogers’ spell at Villa.
Club officials reportedly believe it represents the largest sell-on fee ever received by an English club.
Villa Begin Squad Rebuild
Rogers becomes the second high-profile midfielder to leave Aston Villa this week following Youri Tielemans’ £35 million move to Manchester United.
Despite the departures, Villa have already begun rebuilding their squad.
The Midlands club have completed the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth more than £50 million, while also lining up a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, valued at around £38 million.
