Calafiori Backs Gattuso to Guide Italy Back to World Cup

Riccardo Calafiori has expressed strong confidence in Gennaro Gattuso, backing the Italy boss to lead the national team to World Cup qualification during a crucial playoff campaign.

The defender, who joked he has spent more time with Gattuso than with his own mother in recent months, highlighted the growing bond within the squad as Italy national football team prepares for a decisive set of fixtures.

Italy face a tense route to qualification after finishing second in their group behind Norway national football team, who won all eight matches. The Azzurri are now at risk of missing a third consecutive World Cup, having last appeared at the tournament in 2014 and last reaching the knockout stages when they lifted the trophy in 2006.

Next up is a high-stakes clash with Northern Ireland national football team on Thursday. The winner will advance to face either Wales national football team or Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team for a place at the tournament.

Calafiori is expected to be fit for the semi-final despite reporting discomfort following Arsenal FC’s 2–0 defeat to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.

Looking ahead, the 22-year-old stressed the importance of staying focused and composed under pressure.

“In such a delicate moment, the key is to live in the present, enjoy every moment and take it one game at a time,” Calafiori said.

He added that Italy must avoid being weighed down by the occasion, insisting the team should approach the match with a clear mind and focus on their own performance rather than the opposition.
