The 2026/27 Premier League season has wasted little time delivering surprises, with the opening round producing shock defeats, impressive title-defence statements and strong starts for some of the newly promoted clubs.
Arsenal make early statement
Arsenal immediately underlined their ambition to retain the title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry City. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard were on target as Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the game and impressively began their title defence.
The performance has already prompted former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand to back Arsenal for another league triumph, describing the Gunners as a team that already looks like champions.
United suffer shock defeat
Manchester United endured one of the biggest shocks of the opening weekend, losing 2-0 away to newly promoted Hull City. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy secured Hull’s first league victory over United in 52 years and immediately placed pressure on Michael Carrick.

Manchester City also had to work hard for their opening victory. Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League game as City boss ended in a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, with Josko Gvardiol scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time after Marc Guéhi had cancelled out City’s opener.

Defending champions Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Newcastle United, with Dominik Szoboszlai converting a 99th-minute penalty to rescue a point for Andoni Iraola’s side. The result showed that Liverpool’s title defence could be anything but straightforward.
Chelsea begin Alonso era with thriller
Chelsea provided one of the weekend’s most entertaining games, beating Fulham 3-2 in Xabi Alonso’s first competitive match in charge. New signing Morgan Rogers scored on his debut, while João Pedro and Cole Palmer were also on target.
Promoted sides make their mark
The newly promoted clubs have already shown they are not simply here to make up the numbers. Hull defeated Manchester United, while Ipswich returned to the top flight with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, secured by Jack Clarke’s 90th-minute winner.
