Last Chance: Senegal and Iraq Battle to Keep World Cup Dreams Alive

Senegal and Iraq will enter their final Group I clash knowing that victory could still rescue their World Cup campaigns despite both sides losing their opening two matches.

The two nations remain without a point after defeats to group heavyweights France and Norway, but qualification to the round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams remains a realistic possibility.

For Senegal, the tournament has continued a difficult period for African football’s former continental champions. The Lions of Teranga arrived at the World Cup after losing their Africa Cup of Nations crown off the pitch and have since suffered back-to-back defeats against two of Europe’s strongest sides.

Their campaign began with a spirited performance against France, but the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe ultimately proved decisive as the French captain scored twice in a 3-1 victory.

Senegal then pushed Norway all the way in a thrilling contest before Erling Haaland struck twice to secure a 3-2 victory for the Scandinavians.

While the results have been disappointing, Senegal has shown enough quality to believe their tournament is not yet over.

Iraq find themselves in a similar position after suffering defeats against the same opponents. France defeated them 3-0 as Mbappe continued his outstanding form, while Haaland again proved the difference during Norway’s 4-1 victory.

Those results mean both France and Norway have already secured their places in the knockout rounds, with their final group fixture set to determine who finishes top of Group I.

That leaves Senegal and Iraq facing what is effectively a winner-takes-all encounter.

A victory for either side would move them onto three points and potentially secure a place among the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32.

For Senegal, the match also represents an opportunity to finally reward their encouraging performances. Despite losing both matches, they have competed strongly against elite opposition and will view Iraq as a more manageable challenge.

The African side will hope to rediscover the attacking form that made them one of the continent’s most feared teams, while Iraq will equally believe they can produce a result capable of extending their World Cup journey.

With elimination awaiting the loser and knockout qualification still within reach for the winner, the encounter promises to be one of the most significant final-day battles of the group stage.

For Senegal and Iraq, the World Cup dream remains alive — but only just.
