Tuchel: Bellingham Must Fight for England Starting Spot at World Cup

England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted that Jude Bellingham faces strong competition for a place in the Three Lions’ starting line-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite being regarded as one of England’s most talented players, Bellingham has started only four matches since Tuchel took charge in January 2025, while making three additional appearances from the bench.

The German coach has often opted for Morgan Rogers, who has become a key figure under his leadership. Rogers has featured in 12 of Tuchel’s 13 matches in charge and was the only player involved in all eight of England’s World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Speaking to reporters, Tuchel acknowledged that competition for places is intense within the squad.

“Yes, he has,” Tuchel said when asked whether Bellingham must battle for a starting berth.

“He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.”

The England boss stressed that no player’s place is guaranteed, with form and tactical requirements continuing to influence team selection.

“These roles can always change, but at the moment I think there are 14 or 15 proper starters and Jude is one of them,” he added.

Bellingham, who plays for Real Madrid, remains one of England’s most influential talents and is expected to play a major role during the World Cup campaign. However, Tuchel’s comments underline the fierce competition within a squad packed with quality options across midfield and attack.

With the tournament approaching, England’s depth could prove to be one of their greatest strengths as they seek to challenge for their first World Cup title since 1966.
