Tobi Amusan reinforced her status as Africa’s sprint hurdles queen after powering to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 24th African Athletics Championships in Ghana on Wednesday.

The world record holder produced another commanding display, leading the race from start to finish to secure her third continental title in the event.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller claimed the silver medal after finishing strongly behind the Nigerian star, while Adaobi Tabugbo completed a memorable outing for Team Nigeria by taking bronze her first individual medal for the country at the championships.

The triumph adds another major milestone to Amusan’s decorated continental career, following her maiden African title on home soil in 2018 and her second championship victory in Mauritius in 2022.

Amusan did not contest the hurdles event at the previous edition in Cameroon in 2024, making her return to the top of the African podium even more significant.

The official time for the 2026 final was yet to be released, with organisers facing criticism throughout the championships over a series of technical and administrative issues. Complaints have emerged over a dysfunctional timing system, the absence of live results, incomplete result sheets without wind readings, and inconsistent disqualifications that have frustrated athletes and observers alike.

Despite the confusion surrounding the official timing, Amusan had already stamped her authority on the competition after recording the fastest performances in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing victory in the final.

“First, I will say all thanks to God. I don’t know what the time is, but I got the win that’s all that matters and I’m looking forward to the next race,” Amusan said after the race.

With another continental gold medal secured, the Nigerian star continues to underline her dominance ahead of the sport’s next major international competitions.
