Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has welcomed the arrival of the team’s younger players, saying the new faces have added fresh energy and “spice” to the squad ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener against Madagascar.
Nigeria begin their qualification campaign against the Barea at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, with Simon insisting that the team’s immediate objective is to secure all three points.
The Paris FC winger said the introduction of younger players had created a positive atmosphere in camp as Nigeria prepare for their first competitive fixtures under the current qualification campaign.
“Surely we feel great and happy about the introduction of younger players in the squad. It’s like adding a little more spice to a good team,” Simon said.
The fresh faces include players such as George Ilenikhena, Moses Usor and Isaac James, who have received their first senior invitations under head coach Eric Chelle. Arthur Okonkwo is also among the new additions to the squad.
Simon believes the blend of youth and experience can give the Super Eagles an added dimension as they begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON finals.
“Our goal now is to win; that’s the desire of everyone,” he added.
The 31-year-old is one of the more experienced players in Chelle’s squad and is expected to play an important role against Madagascar, particularly with Victor Osimhen ruled out by injury. Taiwo Awoniyi was subsequently called into the squad as Osimhen’s replacement.
Nigeria’s attacking options also include Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and Ilenikhena.
Chelle has challenged his players to approach the qualifier with an aggressive mindset, stressing the importance of collecting maximum points from the opening fixture.
“We have to show everyone from Day One that we want it, and the only way to do that is to go for it with our hearts and refuse to slow down at any point. We must go for the points without any hesitation,” the coach said.
Nigeria will then travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29 in their second Group D fixture.
The Super Eagles will be hoping to avoid a repeat of their surprise 2-0 defeat to Madagascar at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, although Nigeria had already secured qualification for the knockout stage before that encounter.
For Simon and his teammates, however, the focus is firmly on Friday’s opening assignment.
“Rest assured that we will put up our best to win on Friday,” Simon said.
The Uyo clash is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time, with Nigeria looking to launch their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a victory.
