Senegal head coach Mama Moussa Cisse has announced his resignation following his side’s elimination from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Cisse confirmed his decision after Senegal’s goalless draw against tournament hosts Morocco in their final Group A fixture. This result ended the West Africans’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Senegal entered the decisive encounter needing a victory to keep their knockout-stage ambitions alive but were unable to find the breakthrough despite a determined performance.

The draw saw Morocco finish top of Group A with seven points, while Algeria claimed second place after defeating Kenya 2-0 in the group’s other fixture. Senegal ended the campaign in third place with four points, while Kenya finished bottom without a point.

Morocco had the best chance to win the match, but Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye emerged as the hero by saving two second-half penalties to preserve the draw.

Speaking after the game, Cisse said the time had come for someone else to take the team forward after a decade in charge.

“It’s time to leave and let others come and break through this glass ceiling. Today, we have a good team, we’re in a good dynamic,” Cisse said.

“Perhaps another coach, with a different vision and experience, can lead this team towards the goals we’ve set for ourselves.”

The departing coach reflected on his 10-year spell with the national team, admitting he had given everything to the role.

“I’ve been here for 10 years. It’s time to hand the reins over to someone else, to try new things. I’ve given everything I had, but apparently, it’s not enough.”

Cisse’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Senegal women’s football, with the federation now expected to begin the search for a new head coach to lead the team into the next phase of its development.
