Mourinho Gives Verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Midfield Experiment at Real Madrid

The debate over whether Trent Alexander-Arnold can become a genuine midfielder has resurfaced after Jose Mourinho deployed the Real Madrid defender in the centre of the pitch against Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old started in midfield as Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Italian side in their Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Alexander-Arnold’s ability to operate in midfield has been a long-running talking point throughout his career.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate experimented with him in the position during Euro 2024 but abandoned the idea after just two group-stage matches.

At Liverpool, meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp regularly used Alexander-Arnold’s passing range and vision to influence games from an inverted right-back role, allowing him to move into central areas while retaining his defensive position on paper.

Since joining Real Madrid last summer, however, Alexander-Arnold has struggled to establish himself as the club’s undisputed first-choice right-back.

Mourinho’s decision to move him into midfield against Inter offered another opportunity for the England international to demonstrate his qualities in the position.

Despite praising his performance, Mourinho was quick to insist that Alexander-Arnold should not be considered a natural midfielder.

“He has played midfield with England and Liverpool… but he is not a midfielder,” Mourinho said after the match.

The Portuguese manager nevertheless praised the way Alexander-Arnold adapted to his instructions.

“He has played very well. He has interpreted what he needed to really well, tactically.”

Mourinho also highlighted the contribution of Federico Valverde, who worked alongside Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

“Both him and Valverde have worked very well at this level,” he added.

While Mourinho was pleased with Alexander-Arnold’s contribution, his comments suggest the experiment is unlikely to become a permanent tactical solution.

The former Liverpool star may therefore continue to operate primarily as a right-back, while his ability to step into midfield remains another weapon available to Madrid when circumstances demand it.
