Morocco Dump Netherlands Out on Penalties to Reach World Cup Quarter-finals

Morocco produced another memorable FIFA World Cup upset by eliminating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw, sending Ronald Koeman’s side crashing out in the round of 16.

The Atlas Lions forced extra time through Issa Diop’s stoppage-time equaliser before holding their nerve in the shootout, where Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty to seal a famous victory.

The defeat marks one of the Netherlands’ most disappointing World Cup exits, with Koeman’s side failing to capitalise after taking the lead late in normal time.

Morocco dominated much of the contest and looked the more dangerous side from the outset. Azzedine Ounahi came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, while Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a series of impressive saves to keep the scores level.

The Netherlands survived another major scare shortly after the hour mark when Micky van de Ven made a superb recovery challenge to deny Achraf Hakimi a clear run on goal.

Koeman’s side eventually found a breakthrough in the 72nd minute. Following relentless pressure from Crysencio Summerville, Cody Gakpo reacted quickest to a loose ball and fired past Yassine Bounou to hand the Oranje a lead that looked set to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

However, the Dutch retreated deep into their own half in the closing stages, allowing Morocco to pile on the pressure.

The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time as Diop rose highest to power home a header, sending the match into extra time and stunning the Dutch defence.

Morocco continued to create the better opportunities during the additional 30 minutes, with Soufiane Rahimi denied by another outstanding Verbruggen save before the match was settled from the penalty spot.

Teun Koopmeiners successfully converted the Netherlands’ opening kick, but Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber both failed from 12 yards, while Summerville also saw his effort saved by Bounou.

Saibari calmly dispatched the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.

The victory sends Morocco into the World Cup quarter-finals, while the Netherlands exit the tournament after a performance that will invite intense scrutiny over Koeman’s tactics, substitutions and conservative approach despite possessing one of the tournament’s most talented attacking squads.
