For Kelechi Iheanacho, the move to Turkey was supposed to be another opportunity to steady a career that had lost some of its earlier momentum. Instead, the Nigerian striker has quickly turned the switch to Bursaspor into one of the most encouraging chapters of his recent career.
Iheanacho joined Bursaspor on a free transfer in July after leaving Celtic, reportedly signing a three-year contract with the Turkish club. The move came after a period in which the former Manchester City and Leicester City forward had struggled to find a settled home.
Now, the 29-year-old appears to have found the environment he needed.
A fresh start in Turkey
Iheanacho arrived at Bursaspor with something to prove. His pedigree was never in question. He had already experienced Premier League football, won trophies with Manchester City and Leicester City, and established himself as a Nigeria international.
But the years following his impressive Leicester spell were more complicated.
A move to Sevilla failed to produce the consistency expected, while a loan spell at Middlesbrough offered only a brief change of scenery. His subsequent move to Celtic brought flashes of the old Iheanacho, but his time in Scotland ultimately lasted only one season.
Turkey has offered something different: responsibility, regular football and, most importantly, confidence.
The goals are flowing again
The most obvious sign of Iheanacho’s revival is his scoring form.
He has scored in each of his first four league appearances for Bursaspor, finding the net against Bodrum, Iğdır FK, Fatih Karagümrük and Kayserispor. Those goals have helped Bursaspor win three of their opening four league matches.
By early September, his numbers had become even more impressive, with reports putting him at eight goals and two assists in his first six matches of the new season.
That is the kind of run that can change the narrative around a player.
For Iheanacho, it is not simply about the number of goals. His recent performances suggest that his movement, positioning and instinct inside the penalty area remain intact when he is given confidence and regular opportunities.
Rediscovering the player Nigeria knows
There was a time when Iheanacho was regarded as one of the brightest young forwards in world football.
His breakthrough at Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini and later Pep Guardiola showed a striker with remarkable composure in front of goal. He scored 21 goals in 64 appearances for City before moving to Leicester, where he eventually produced the most prolific campaign of his Premier League career.
His 2020-21 season at Leicester was particularly memorable. Iheanacho scored 19 goals in all competitions, including 12 Premier League goals, as he developed a devastating partnership with Jamie Vardy.
The challenge since then has been reproducing that consistency.
His current spell in Turkey is therefore significant because it offers evidence that the qualities that made him such a dangerous forward have not disappeared.
More than a personal revival
Bursaspor’s decision to bring Iheanacho to Turkey was also an indication of the club’s ambition.
The Nigerian reportedly turned down the opportunity to continue at Celtic before committing his future to Bursaspor, where he is expected to play an important role in the club’s push for promotion.
That responsibility appears to be working in his favour.
Rather than being one option among several forwards, Iheanacho has become a focal point of Bursaspor’s attack. Opponents are increasingly aware of his threat, yet he has continued to find ways to influence games.
That is perhaps the biggest difference between the Iheanacho of recent seasons and the one currently playing in Turkey.
A new chapter for the Super Eagles striker
For Nigeria, Iheanacho’s resurgence is equally encouraging.
The Super Eagles have traditionally valued his versatility and finishing ability, particularly his capacity to operate behind a main striker or play as a central forward.
At his best, he offers something different from a pure target man. He can drop between the lines, combine with teammates and arrive in dangerous positions around the penalty area.
If his current form continues, the conversation around his international future could change considerably.
At 29, Iheanacho is no longer the teenage wonderkid who announced himself at Manchester City. He is now a vastly more experienced player attempting to rebuild his career on his own terms.
Turkey may not have been the destination many expected when he left Celtic.
But sometimes a career revival does not require the biggest stage. It requires the right stage.
For Iheanacho, Bursaspor appears to be providing exactly that.
And with the goals flowing again, the Nigerian has reminded everyone that the striker who once thrilled Premier League audiences has not gone away.
He may simply have needed a new place to find his groove.
