Japan and Spain have announced themselves as Genuine World Cup Contenders

Japan and Spain have announced themselves as Genuine World Cup Contenders

Japan and Spain produced two of the most impressive performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as both nations delivered emphatic victories that sent a strong warning to their rivals.

While Japan dismantled Tunisia 4-0 to move to the brink of the knockout stages, Spain finally showcased their full attacking potential with a dominant victory that propelled La Roja to the top of Group H.

Japan Ends Tunisia’s World Cup Dream

Japan produced a ruthless display in Guadalupe to eliminate Tunisia and underline their growing status as one of the tournament’s dark horses.

The Samurai Blue completely outclassed the North Africans, who have endured a disastrous campaign that has now ended after just two matches.

Tunisia arrived at the game under new management after Herve Renard was appointed following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi in the wake of their humiliating 5-1 defeat against Sweden. However, the change in the dugout failed to halt their decline.

Renard, making his third World Cup appearance as a head coach after previous spells with Morocco and Saudi Arabia, could not inspire another famous upset.

Japan was simply too good.

Keito Nakamura created the opening goal with a superb pass for Daichi Kamada, who finished off a sweeping team move to give Japan an early advantage.

Ayase Ueda then doubled the lead with a magnificent strike, showcasing the technical quality that has become a hallmark of Hajime Moriyasu’s side.

After the break, Ueda turned provider as he set up Junya Ito to make it 3-0, before Kaishu Sano combined with Ueda late on to complete the rout.

Every Japanese goal reflected the team’s collective strength, movement and tactical discipline.

The victory leaves Japan level on points and goal difference with the Netherlands at the top of Group F and firmly on course for the knockout rounds.

More importantly, it has reinforced growing belief that the Samurai Blue could become one of the tournament’s surprise packages.

Spain Finally Find Their Rhythm

After suffering one of the biggest shocks of the tournament, Spain responded in style with a devastating display of attacking football that reminded the world why they remain among the favorites.

Luis de la Fuente’s side produced the quick passing, movement and creativity that have defined Spanish football for generations.

Much of the attention fell on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who made his first World Cup start after his electric substitute appearance in the previous match.

The Barcelona star wasted little time announcing himself on football’s biggest stage.

Yamal opened the scoring after meeting Mikel Oyarzabal’s dangerous cross, becoming one of the tournament’s youngest goalscorers.

“Being able to score here with my mum and my family in the stands is a dream come true,” Yamal said after the match.

Oyarzabal then took control of the contest, scoring twice in quick succession before the first hydration break to effectively end the game as a contest.

The Real Sociedad forward nearly completed his hat-trick after capitalising on a defensive mistake, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.

De la Fuente wisely withdrew both Yamal and Oyarzabal at halftime to preserve his key players for tougher challenges ahead.

Although Spain reduced their intensity after the interval, they continued to dominate possession and added a fourth goal when an effort from Marc Cucurella eventually resulted in an own goal by Hassan Al Tambakti.

Ferran Torres thought he had added a fifth in stoppage time, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside.

Two Teams Sending a Message

Japan’s relentless intensity and Spain’s attacking brilliance have placed both nations firmly among the teams to watch as the tournament progresses.

Japan may lack the individual superstars possessed by some of the traditional powers, but their organisation, discipline and teamwork make them dangerous opponents.

Spain, meanwhile, appear to have recovered from their early setback and now look capable of mounting a serious challenge for the trophy.

With the knockout rounds approaching, both teams have delivered the kind of performances that can change perceptions.

The question now is whether Japan and Spain can maintain that momentum when the stakes become even higher.
