Is Japan Emerging as Asia's Biggest World Cup Threat After Crushing Tunisia?

Japan produced one of their most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they swept aside Tunisia 4-0 to move to the brink of the knockout stages and deepen the North Africans’ tournament misery.

The Samurai Blue were dominant from start to finish in Guadalupe, Mexico, condemning Tunisia to a second successive defeat and confirming their elimination from the competition.

For Tunisia, the result capped a disastrous week that began with a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden and continued with the dismissal of head coach Sabri Lamouchi. Former Saudi Arabia manager Herve Renard was appointed in an attempt to revive the campaign, but the change failed to produce an immediate response.

Japan wasted little time in taking control.

Just four minutes into the contest, Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada finished off a swift counter-attack to give the Asian side an early lead at Monterrey Stadium.

The opening goal set the tone for a match that Japan controlled with remarkable authority.

Ayase Ueda doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, producing a superb finish from the edge of the penalty area as his effort travelled through a defender’s legs before finding the far corner.

Tunisia struggled to cope with Japan’s movement, passing and relentless pressing. The North Africans appeared short of confidence and offered little attacking threat throughout the contest.

Junya Ito made it 3-0 after racing through on goal and calmly finishing past goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen, while Ueda completed his brace with a looping header that sealed an emphatic victory.

Japan’s fluid, possession-based football continually stretched Tunisia’s defence, with the Samurai Blue looking several levels above their opponents.

The victory moves Japan onto four points in Group F and places them in a strong position to reach the last 32. At the very least, they are now well placed to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, although they will hope to secure automatic qualification when they face Sweden in their final group match.

Tunisia, meanwhile, have endured another disappointing World Cup campaign. After suffering heavy defeats to both Sweden and Japan, their hopes of progressing beyond the group stage have once again ended in frustration.

They now face a difficult final fixture against group leaders the Netherlands, while attention may soon turn toward rebuilding after another unsuccessful tournament.

For Japan, however, the performance sent a clear message to the rest of the competition. Organized, clinical and tactically disciplined, the Samurai Blue are beginning to look like one of the tournament’s most dangerous emerging teams.
