Iran overcame a turbulent build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to secure a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand in one of the tournament’s most entertaining matches so far.
Amid political tensions, visa complications, and uncertainty surrounding their participation, Iran showed remarkable resilience to come from behind twice and claim a valuable point in Group G.
The encounter carried significant off-field attention before kick-off. Iran’s preparations had been disrupted by ongoing geopolitical tensions, visa restrictions affecting members of their delegation, and a late relocation of training activities. Despite the distractions, the Iranian players delivered a spirited performance that earned widespread admiration.
New Zealand struck first in just the seventh minute. Veteran striker Chris Wood held the ball up superbly before linking up with Elijah Just, who volleyed past Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to give the Oceania side an early advantage.
Iran responded positively and found an equaliser through Ramin Rezaeian, who capped a strong spell of pressure with a well-taken finish.
However, New Zealand regained control shortly after the interval. Once again, Wood was heavily involved as he combined with Just, who completed a flowing team move to score his second goal of the match and restore his side’s lead.
The Iranians refused to surrender. Rezaeian turned provider with a dangerous delivery from the right flank, and Mohammad Mohebbi powered a header in off the post to make it 2-2 and spark celebrations among the Iranian supporters.
The result leaves Group G finely balanced after Belgium and Egypt also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw earlier in the day, meaning all four teams sit on one point after their opening matches.
