Manchester United have moved swiftly to strengthen their depleted midfield after agreeing a £50 million deal with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
The agreement gathered pace in recent hours after United formally expressed their interest over the weekend. The Premier League giants will pay an initial £48 million, with a further £2 million in performance-related add-ons considered achievable. Chelsea have also secured a 10% sell-on clause as part of the transfer.
Santos has now been cleared to undergo a medical, paving the way for his move to Old Trafford. His arrival comes alongside another expected reinforcement, with fellow Brazilian Ederson also scheduled for a medical before completing a £35 million transfer from Italian club Atalanta following Brazil’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
United’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements became a priority after veteran midfielder Casemiro departed at the expiration of his contract. The situation worsened when Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious cruciate knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup, ruling him out for an extended period.
The Red Devils had initially targeted Elliot Anderson, but abandoned the move after it became clear Nottingham Forest would demand well over £110 million. They then switched attention to Mateus Fernandes, only to see the midfielder join Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in an £85 million deal.
With Kobbie Mainoo still away on England duty at the World Cup, United faced the prospect of beginning pre-season with Mason Mount as their only recognised senior central midfielder ahead of their opening friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.
Santos’ signing is expected to ease those concerns significantly, providing fresh energy and depth in midfield as manager Michael Carrick prepares for the new campaign.
For Chelsea, Santos becomes the club’s third notable departure of the summer following the exits of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton.
United will now hope Santos can justify his price tag and become the long-term solution to a midfield department that has undergone major changes ahead of the 2026/27 season.
