Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Boniface, Victor Osimhen and Maduka Okoye delivered impressive performances for their respective clubs at the weekend, providing an encouraging early glimpse of what Nigerian footballers could offer in the 2026/27 European season.
Chukwueze was the standout performer as AC Milan defeated Manchester United 4-2 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, contributing a goal and two assists in a complete performance.
The Super Eagles winger cancelled out Harry Maguire’s early opener with a composed finish from Goncalo Ramos’ lay-off after United had taken the lead inside the opening two minutes.
Patrick Dorgu restored United’s advantage six minutes after the restart, but Chukwueze quickly responded by setting up Alphadjo Cisse for Milan’s equaliser.
He then turned provider again, delivering for Ramos to head Milan into the lead before Ruben Loftus-Cheek completed the scoring.
The performance will be a major confidence boost for Chukwueze as he looks to establish himself at Milan after his loan spell at Fulham last season. His display has also strengthened the growing belief that he could play a significant role in Ruben Amorim’s plans this season.
Boniface also made headlines, scoring a late winner as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Ibrahim Maza put Leverkusen ahead with a long-range effort inside the opening minute before Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw levelled shortly before half-time.
Boniface settled the contest in the 82nd minute with a fine finish, giving the Nigerian striker an ideal boost as he continues his bid to return to his best following a difficult spell disrupted by injury.
Maduka Okoye also made a positive return for Udinese, keeping a clean sheet as his side secured a 1-0 victory over Padova in the Coppa Italia.
The goalkeeper’s shutout provides an encouraging start as he seeks to regain consistency and strengthen his position ahead of another demanding season.
Osimhen, meanwhile, continued to underline his importance for Galatasaray, with his latest goalscoring exploits adding to the strong weekend showing by Nigerian players across Europe.
The impressive performances come at an important time for the Super Eagles, with the 2026/27 club season approaching and Nigeria preparing for another busy international calendar.
