Chelsea remain in negotiations with Spanish club Rayo Vallecano over a move for highly-rated left-back Pep Chavarria as new manager Xabi Alonso continues shaping his squad ahead of the new season.

The Blues have already undergone major changes this summer, beginning with Alonso’s appointment as head coach following a turbulent campaign that saw Chelsea finish 10th in the Premier League.

Alonso officially took charge last week, replacing Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed in April after a disappointing season. Rosenior had himself succeeded Enzo Maresca, with both managers losing their jobs during a difficult campaign for the west London club.

The former Bayer Leverkusen boss arrives at Stamford Bridge with a growing reputation after guiding the German club to their first-ever Bundesliga title three years ago.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are now pushing to strengthen their defensive options and remain in discussions with Rayo Vallecano over the potential signing of Chavarria.

The 27-year-old Spanish full-back has impressed in La Liga with his energetic displays, defensive consistency and ability to contribute in attack, making him an attractive option as Alonso looks to reshape Chelsea’s backline.

While no agreement has yet been reached, negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing as Chelsea seek to bolster their squad before the start of the new campaign.

Chavarria’s arrival would represent another step in Alonso’s rebuilding project as the Blues aim to return to competing for major honours after missing out on European qualification last season.
