Burnley have confirmed the permanent signing of Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis from S.L. Benfica after an obligation-to-buy clause in his loan agreement was activated.
The 26-year-old initially joined the Clarets on transfer deadline day last summer, with reports suggesting the permanent deal is worth around £20.8 million. Following the completion of the agreed conditions during the season, the move has now been formalised.
Florentino made an immediate impact after arriving at Turf Moor, making his debut against Liverpool F.C. in September before registering the first of his two assists in Burnley’s 2-0 victory over Leeds United F.C. the following month.
The defensive midfielder quickly became an integral part of former manager Scott Parker‘s side, making 33 appearances as Burnley battled to retain their Premier League status. Despite their efforts, the Clarets were relegated and will compete in the Championship next season.
Burnley will now rely on Florentino’s experience as they aim to secure an immediate return to the top flight.
A product of Benfica’s renowned academy, Florentino enjoyed significant success in Portugal, helping the club win the Primeira Liga titles in 2019 and 2023, as well as the Taca da Liga in 2025. During his time in Lisbon, he also played alongside current Chelsea F.C. midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The midfielder has also gained valuable experience abroad through loan spells with AS Monaco in France and Getafe CF in Spain.
Having featured in the UEFA Champions League and represented Portugal national under-21 football team at various youth levels from Under-15 through to Under-21, Florentino arrives as one of Burnley’s most accomplished players as they prepare for life in the Championship.
The Clarets will hope his quality, leadership and top-level experience can play a pivotal role in their promotion push during the 2026/27 campaign.
