Calvin Bassey believes the Nigeria national football team deserved more than a draw from their international friendly against Poland national football team, insisting the team had enough chances to secure victory.
Nigeria were held to a 2-2 draw by Poland at the Stadion PGE Narodowy on Wednesday night despite twice taking the lead during an entertaining encounter.
The Super Eagles went ahead through Terem Moffi before the hosts equalised late in the first half. Nigeria regained the advantage when Paul Onuachu converted from the penalty spot in the second half, only for Poland to snatch a stoppage-time equaliser.
Reflecting on the result, Bassey admitted there was disappointment in the Nigerian camp, particularly because the team appeared to have the game under control for long periods.
According to the defender, Nigeria’s inability to convert additional chances and see out the match ultimately proved costly.
“We should have won the game,” Bassey reportedly said after the match.
The centre-back pointed to lapses in concentration and the failure to capitalize on key moments as factors that allowed Poland to remain in the contest and eventually earn a share of the spoils.
Despite the frustration, the result extended Nigeria’s encouraging run of performances under coach Éric Chelle, with the Super Eagles continuing to show attacking quality against strong opposition.
The draw also provided valuable preparation ahead of Nigeria’s next international assignment, with the team expected to focus on improving its game management and defensive concentration in crucial moments.
While the late equaliser denied the Super Eagles victory, Bassey’s comments reflect a growing belief within the squad that Nigeria is capable of competing strongly against top European opponents as the team continues its development under Chelle.
