Arsenal’s hopes of signing Brazil international striker Joao Pedro have reportedly suffered a major setback, with Chelsea set to reward the forward with a lucrative new long-term contract amid growing interest from rival clubs.
The Gunners remain in the market for attacking reinforcements despite identifying Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres as their primary target. Manager Mikel Arteta is also keen to strengthen his frontline with another proven goalscorer ahead of the new season.
Arsenal have also been linked with Atletico Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, a player reportedly admired by sporting director Andrea Berta. However, Atletico are understood to have no intention of selling the Argentina international, who is also said to favour a future move to Barcelona.
According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Arsenal have also turned their attention to Chelsea striker João Pedro and were prepared to submit an offer worth €100 million (£85.5 million) for the 24-year-old.
Barcelona are also reported to have indicated a willingness to match that valuation, but Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, have opted to retain the striker by offering him improved terms.
The report claims Chelsea have reached an agreement to extend João Pedro’s current contract, which was due to expire in 2032, by an additional year until 2033. The proposed deal is also expected to include a significant salary increase.
Negotiations are said to have accelerated in recent weeks following strong interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona, with the Blues now confident of securing the striker’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
If the extension is completed as expected, Arsenal will be forced to explore alternative options as they continue their search for another elite striker before the close of the summer transfer window.
