David Silva Makes Shock Return at 40 After Three Years Retired

David Silva has sensationally come out of retirement at the age of 40, signing a short-term deal with Hong Kong Premier League side Supreme Sha Tin.

The former Manchester City and Spain star retired in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season with Real Sociedad. More than three years later, the midfield maestro is ready to lace up his boots again.

Silva spent a decade at Manchester City, making 436 appearances and helping the club win four Premier League titles. He also lifted the FA Cup twice and the League Cup five times during his trophy-filled spell at the Etihad.

At international level, Silva won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, earning 125 caps for his country.

Supreme Sha Tin were promoted to the Hong Kong Premier League last season and currently sit eighth after four matches.

The club confirmed that Silva will travel to Hong Kong to settle in and begin training as he builds up his fitness before making his competitive debut.

Silva is reportedly targeting a return to action as early as October 18 against Hong Kong FC, although his fitness will determine whether he is ready for that game.

“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” Silva said.

Three years after saying goodbye to football, David Silva is back. And at 40, the Spanish magician has one more chapter to write.
