Nigeria’s Falconets finally produced the attacking display they needed, thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F fixture to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The emphatic victory at the Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź lifted Nigeria to second place in Group F on four points, behind Spain, and set up a knockout-stage meeting with England.
But while the record-breaking scoreline will dominate the headlines, the Falconets’ route to the knockout stage has exposed concerns that cannot simply be brushed aside by the margin of victory.
Nigeria entered the final group game under pressure after opening their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before being held to a 0-0 draw by China. With only one point from their first two matches, Moses Aduku’s side needed a strong result against New Caledonia to keep their tournament alive.
The response was emphatic.
Ramotalahi Kareem opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute before Rebecca Adegbemile doubled Nigeria’s advantage two minutes later. Janet Seimeyeha Akekoromowei then made it 3-0, with Kareem adding her second as the Falconets went into half-time with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Nigeria continued their assault after the restart, with Winner Onajite David and Kareem completing their hat-tricks, while Tosin Rafiu and Adegbemile also found the net. New Caledonia pulled one goal back through Joceline Kourevi late in the game, but David completed her own hat-trick in stoppage time to complete the 10-1 rout.
The result was enough to send Nigeria through, but the need for such a huge victory also highlighted how little room for error the Falconets had created for themselves.
Against Spain, Nigeria struggled to create enough attacking threat and were beaten 2-0. Their second match against China produced another frustrating result as neither side could find a breakthrough.
That means the New Caledonia game, despite its spectacular scoreline, cannot completely erase the questions raised by the first two matches.
The Falconets will now face a much tougher examination against England in the Round of 16, where another slow start or lack of attacking efficiency could prove costly.
Nigeria have shown that they possess the firepower to dismantle opposition when they find their rhythm. The challenge now is to reproduce that intensity and clinical finishing against stronger opponents.
For a team that has twice finished as runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, simply reaching the knockout stage is not enough. The Falconets will need to show that Sunday’s 10-1 victory was more than a response to pressure — it must become the foundation for a serious run at the title.
