United States President Donald Trump has acknowledged personally asking FIFA to review the one-match suspension handed to United States striker Folarin Balogun, a move that has ignited fresh debate over political influence in international sport.
Speaking at the White House, Trump confirmed he contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino after Balogun received a straight red card during the United States’ World Cup victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun had been due to miss the Americans’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium under FIFA’s automatic suspension rules. However, football’s world governing body made the unprecedented decision to suspend the one-match ban for 12 months, making the Monaco forward eligible for selection.
Trump defended his intervention, insisting he merely requested a review rather than attempting to influence the final verdict.
“I thought it was two great athletes who crashed into each other and got entangled,” Trump said.
“I think it would have left a big stain. I can’t tell them what to do. I don’t believe they made the decision; I believe it was the commission that made the decision. And it was the right decision.”
The president added that he did not consider Balogun’s challenge on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic worthy of a dismissal, arguing that allowing the suspension to stand would have been unfair to both the player and the tournament.
The decision has quickly evolved beyond a sporting controversy into a political one, with questions emerging over whether elected leaders should become involved in disciplinary matters governed by independent international sporting bodies.
Belgium reacted strongly to FIFA’s ruling. The Royal Belgian Football Association described itself as “astonished” by the decision and warned it would continue defending what it called the principles of ethics and fair competition.
The federation said it remained deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding Balogun’s reinstatement and pledged to pursue the matter beyond the tournament regardless of the outcome of the United States’ clash with Belgium.
The controversy also drew criticism from England manager Thomas Tuchel, who questioned where FIFA should draw the line when reviewing disciplinary decisions.
Tuchel, whose own team recently played with ten men after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off against Mexico, warned that overturning automatic suspensions could create uncertainty over future disciplinary processes.
“Where to draw the line is the question that I ask,” Tuchel said.
“Do we appeal if a yellow card is not a yellow card? Do we think it is not a red card? Where does this start and where does this end?”
Balogun, who has already scored three goals during the tournament, is now available for the United States’ knockout fixture after FIFA’s extraordinary intervention, ensuring the political debate surrounding the decision is likely to continue long after the final whistle.
