Germany booked their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in dramatic fashion as substitute Deniz Undav scored a stunning stoppage-time winner to complete a remarkable comeback against Ivory Coast.
The four-time world champions looked to be heading for frustration in Toronto after falling behind to an inspired Ivory Coast side, but Julian Nagelsmann’s substitutions transformed the contest as Germany secured a thrilling 2-1 victory in Group E.
Undav, who had already made a huge impact from the bench in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, once again proved decisive. The Stuttgart forward scored twice, including a dramatic winner in the 94th minute that sent the German supporters into celebration and left Ivory Coast heartbroken.
The African side had taken the lead in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessie after an impressive opening half.
Teenage winger Yan Diomande continued to showcase his enormous potential by creating the opportunity with a dangerous run and pass to Amad Diallo. Although Nathaniel Brown blocked Diallo’s initial effort, Kessie reacted quickest to convert the rebound and give the Elephants a deserved advantage.
Emerse Fae’s side had matched Germany for intensity and looked dangerous on the counterattack, while Germany struggled to convert their possession into goals.
Aleksandar Pavlovic thought he had given Germany the lead earlier in the game, but his header from a corner was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
Kai Havertz also had a goal disallowed after Jamal Musiala was judged to have fouled Emmanuel Agbadou in the build-up.
Ivory Coast had opportunities to extend their advantage, with Christ Inao Oulai and Kessie both wasting promising chances that could have put the match beyond Germany’s reach.
Those missed opportunities eventually proved costly.
Nagelsmann introduced Nadiem Amiri and Undav from the bench, and the pair combined brilliantly in the 68th minute when Amiri delivered an inviting cross that Undav finished clinically to bring Germany level.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, the match appeared destined to end in a draw.
However, Germany found one final moment of quality.
Felix Nmecha’s pass was expertly controlled by Undav, who turned sharply before calmly slotting past Fofana to complete a stunning comeback and secure Germany’s place in the knockout rounds.
Fofana had produced several important saves throughout the contest, denying Nathaniel Brown and Amiri late on, but even the outstanding Ivorian goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Undav’s decisive strike.
The victory means Germany advance to the last 32 with a perfect record after two matches, having scored nine goals in their opening games.
For Ivory Coast, the defeat was a painful one after producing arguably their best performance of the tournament. Nevertheless, the Elephants still control their own destiny and can qualify from Group E with victory over World Cup debutants Curacao in their final group match.
As for Germany, the emergence of Deniz Undav may become one of the tournament’s most important stories. Four goals and two assists in just two substitute appearances have transformed the striker into one of the World Cup’s early stars.
And if Germany needed a hero to ignite their campaign, they may have found one in the most dramatic fashion possible.
