Belgium came from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening Group G match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, denying the Pharaohs what would have been their first-ever victory at the global tournament.
Egypt looked set to make history after a spirited display inspired by a passionate travelling support in Seattle, but a second-half own goal ensured the points were shared.
The North Africans struck first in the 21st minute when Emam Ashour unleashed a stunning 20-yard effort that flew beyond Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and into the bottom corner.
Egypt continued to threaten and nearly doubled its advantage before the break. Mostafa Zico fired a low shot across goal that forced an excellent save from Courtois. At the same time, captain Mohamed Salah later saw a second-half header brilliantly denied by the Belgian shot-stopper.
Belgium struggled to find its rhythm for long periods, but the introduction of veteran striker Romelu Lukaku changed the complexion of the contest.
Just moments after coming on, Lukaku’s presence in the penalty area created panic in the Egyptian defence. A dangerous low cross from Thomas Meunier was inadvertently turned into his own net by defender Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute.
The equaliser came shortly after Kevin De Bruyne had rattled the outside of the post with a free-kick as Belgium began to increase the pressure.
Despite conceding, Egypt held firm during the closing stages to secure a valuable point and avoid defeat at a World Cup for only the third time in their history.
