Barcelona have reportedly opened talks with the representatives of promising Spanish winger Jan Virgili as the Catalan giants consider bringing the teenager back to the club just one year after his departure.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga champions are exploring the possibility of re-signing the 19-year-old, who joined Real Mallorca last summer in search of regular first-team football.
Virgili’s stock has risen significantly following an impressive breakthrough campaign in Spain’s top flight, despite Mallorca’s relegation to the Segunda División. The Spanish youth international featured in 31 league matches, registering two goals and six assists in what was his first full season at the senior level.
The winger currently has a €12 million release clause in his contract. However, Barcelona is believed to hold a significant advantage in negotiations, having retained 40 percent of his economic rights when he left the club. That arrangement could allow the Blaugrana to complete a deal for approximately €7.2 million.
Virgili enjoyed a strong first half of the season and established himself as a regular starter at Mallorca. However, his opportunities became more limited following the appointment of coach Martin Demichelis in February, with the youngster making just two starts in the club’s final 10 league matches.
Despite that decline in playing time, the teenager’s performances attracted attention across Spain. His attacking numbers compared favourably with some of La Liga’s biggest stars. Virgili averaged 1.6 successful dribbles per game, a figure higher than both Barcelona winger Raphinha and Real Madrid forward Rodrygo. He also created seven big chances during the campaign, matching the output of Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior.
The winger’s blend of pace, creativity and direct running has reportedly placed him on the radar of several clubs, although Barcelona appear keen to secure his signature before competition intensifies.
A return to Camp Nou, however, could present fresh challenges. Barcelona already possess considerable depth in the wide attacking areas, with established options competing for minutes on the left flank. As a result, questions remain over whether Virgili would receive the consistent game time needed for his continued development.
While Barcelona see the youngster as a player with significant long-term potential, the club must also weigh their priorities in the transfer market, with reinforcements in attack and defence also under consideration ahead of the new season.
For now, discussions are ongoing, and Virgili’s future remains one of the intriguing stories developing in the Spanish transfer market.
