French Open Heartbreak: Sabalenka Left Searching for Answers After Paris Collapse

For all her dominance over the past few seasons, this French Open may become another tournament that haunts world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

The Belarusian arrived in Paris carrying the weight of expectation and the form of a champion. With much of the tournament’s established elite already eliminated, many viewed Sabalenka as the overwhelming favourite to finally capture the one Grand Slam title that has continued to elude her.

Instead, Roland Garros delivered another painful lesson.

Sabalenka’s bid for a maiden French Open crown came crashing down in dramatic fashion as she suffered a stunning 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 quarter-final defeat to Russia’s Diana Shnaider.

The result sent shockwaves through the tournament and left many questioning how another major opportunity slipped away from one of the sport’s most dominant players.

For much of the contest, Sabalenka appeared firmly in control. She claimed the opening set and built what looked like a commanding position with a double-break advantage. Yet as the match progressed, momentum shifted dramatically.

Shnaider refused to disappear.

The Russian fought back relentlessly, gradually increasing the pressure while Sabalenka’s game began to unravel. What followed was one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the championship, culminating in a one-sided final set that saw the world number one fail to win a single game.

The defeat is particularly painful because of the context surrounding this year’s tournament.

With no other Grand Slam champions remaining in the draw, Sabalenka appeared to have a clear pathway toward lifting the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time. It was the type of opportunity that elite players dream about.

Yet once again, Paris proved unforgiving.

Despite establishing herself as the dominant force in women’s tennis in recent years, Sabalenka’s Grand Slam tally remains at four titles—a number many believe does not fully reflect her sustained excellence.

The 27-year-old has spent 93 weeks as world number one, collected 11 WTA titles, and regularly overwhelmed opponents with her explosive power and relentless aggression. However, there remains a growing sense that she has left opportunities behind on the sport’s biggest stages.

Following the loss, Sabalenka hinted that the emotional burden of chasing a first French Open title may have played a role.

“Maybe I’m focusing too much that I’ve never won a Slam here,” she admitted.

“Maybe it makes me overthink and over-emotional.”

It was a revealing moment from a player who rarely shows vulnerability.

For all her physical power and competitive intensity, Roland Garros continues to present a mental challenge unlike any other tournament. The pressure of completing another chapter in her legacy may have become an opponent she could not overcome.

The good news for Sabalenka is that her story is far from finished.

She remains the world number one, one of the most feared competitors in tennis, and a favourite whenever she enters a Grand Slam. But as the tour moves beyond Paris, the lingering question remains:

How many more opportunities like this will come along?

For now, Sabalenka leaves Roland Garros disappointed, while Diana Shnaider marches forward carrying the momentum of one of the biggest victories of her career.

And once again, the French Open has reminded the tennis world that talent alone is never enough. At Grand Slam level, managing expectation can be every bit as important as hitting winners.
