World number one Aryna Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, brushing aside Zheng Qinwen in straight sets.
The reigning champion needed just one hour and 25 minutes to seal a 6-3, 6-4 victory, underlining her dominance and extending her impressive run of form. The 27-year-old, who has won the US Open in each of the past two years, looks firmly on course for another deep run in Miami.
Sabalenka will now face American Hailey Baptiste in the last eight after Baptiste produced a similar 6-3, 6-4 win over Jelena Ostapenko.
Elsewhere, fourth seed Coco Gauff overcame a tough challenge to reach the quarter-finals, defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Despite an inconsistent display that included six double faults and five service breaks, the 22-year-old showed resilience to advance.
Gauff, playing in her home tournament, admitted she is managing expectations after a disrupted build-up, having retired from her third-round match at Indian Wells Open earlier this month due to a nerve issue in her left arm.
“I don’t really feel pressure, I feel more supported at this event,” Gauff said. “I want to win this tournament so bad because it is my home, but I didn’t have the best preparation, so I’m keeping my expectations lower.”
She will next face either Amanda Anisimova or Belinda Bencic as she continues her bid for the Miami title.
