Hrgovic Tells Anthony Joshua To Retire After Prenga Fight

Filip Hrgovic has urged Anthony Joshua to consider retiring from boxing after expressing concerns about the former heavyweight world champion’s performance against Kristian Prenga, despite Joshua securing a second-round knockout victory.

Joshua reportedly suffered two knockdowns before stopping the Albanian boxer in their July contest, raising fresh questions about his form as anticipation builds around a potential all-British showdown with Tyson Fury.

Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Hrgovic said he felt sorry for Joshua, arguing that the British heavyweight had made significant changes to his training team but continued to struggle against an opponent he regarded as a journeyman.

“He is done, he shouldn’t be fighting anymore, but he wants to do one more fight,” Hrgovic said.

The Croatian heavyweight also suggested that financial rewards could be a major motivation behind Joshua’s desire to continue competing.

Joshua, 36, remains one of boxing’s most recognisable figures, having won multiple heavyweight world titles and represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games, where he claimed gold at London 2012.

However, questions about his durability and consistency have followed him as he tries to re-establish himself among the heavyweight division’s leading contenders.

The reported knockdowns against Prenga have added another talking point ahead of the anticipated clash with Fury, a fight that has long attracted interest from boxing fans.

Hrgovic’s comments represent his assessment of Joshua’s current condition and prospects rather than a definitive verdict on the former champion’s career. Joshua’s ability to recover, make further adjustments and compete against elite opposition will ultimately determine whether he can silence his critics.

For now, the debate over Joshua’s future continues, with Hrgovic making his position clear: he believes the British heavyweight should walk away from the sport rather than risk prolonging his career for another payday.
